Your Age on Other Planets: Why It Changes
Here's a question that sounds like a riddle but has a precise answer: if you're 25 years old on Earth, how old are you on Mars? (About 13 โ enjoy it.) Your age genuinely is different on every planet, and the reason is one of the most fundamental ideas in astronomy.
A year is an orbit โ and every orbit is different
When you blow out birthday candles, you're celebrating one completed lap of the Earth around the Sun. That lap takes 365.26 days. But the other planets run their own race on their own tracks: closer planets whip around the Sun quickly, distant planets crawl along enormous orbits.
Johannes Kepler worked out the pattern in the 1600s: the farther a planet is from the Sun, the longer its year โ not just because the path is longer, but because the Sun's gravity pulls more weakly out there, so the planet travels more slowly too.
The orbital periods, planet by planet
| Planet | One year lasts | Your Earth age รท this = planet age |
|---|---|---|
| โฟ Mercury | 88 Earth days | ร 4.15 (you get older fast!) |
| โ Venus | 225 Earth days | ร 1.62 |
| ๐ Earth | 365.26 days | ร 1 |
| โ Mars | 687 Earth days | ร 0.53 |
| โ Jupiter | 4,333 Earth days | ร 0.084 |
| โ Saturn | 10,759 Earth days | ร 0.034 |
| โ Uranus | 30,689 Earth days | ร 0.012 |
| โ Neptune | 60,190 Earth days | ร 0.006 |
What this means in real life
- A 10-year-old child is 41 in Mercury years โ technically old enough to be their own parent in Mercury time.
- A 30-year-old is 16 in Mars years but only 2.5 in Jupiter years.
- Nobody in history has had a Neptunian birthday. Neptune takes about 165 Earth years per orbit โ it has completed just one lap since it was discovered in 1846.
The Venus bonus weirdness
Venus deserves its own paragraph. Its day (one full spin, 243 Earth days) is longer than its year (225 Earth days) โ and it spins backwards, so the Sun rises in the west. On Venus, you'd celebrate a birthday before the same day finished. Our Age on Other Planets calculator shows your next birthday on every world, and Venus's calendar is always the funniest column.
Why this matters beyond party tricks
Planetary years aren't trivia โ they're mission planning. When NASA sends a spacecraft to Mars, launch windows open only every 26 months, when Earth and Mars line up correctly in their orbits. Mission designers literally count planetary years and positions for decades in advance. The same math that tells you you're 13 on Mars tells engineers where Mars will be in 2031.
