How to Get a High Score in Astro Dodge
Astro Dodge looks simple โ fly, shoot, survive โ but its scoring system has real depth. A casual player who "just dodges" will plateau around wave 5. A player who understands combo windows, wave bonuses and powerup priorities can double or triple that score. This guide breaks down exactly how the scoring works and the twelve habits that separate a 3,000-point run from a 10,000-point run.
If you haven't played yet, open the Astro Dodge game page in a new tab and follow along โ every tip below works from wave 1.
First, understand how points are actually earned
Four systems feed your score, and they stack:
- Asteroid kills: small rocks give 10 points, medium 25, and big ones 50.
- Combo multiplier: consecutive kills within a short window build a streak. At 6+ consecutive kills every point is doubled (ร2), and at 12+ it's tripled (ร3). The streak resets if too much time passes between kills โ or if you get hit.
- Wave bonus: every 14 seconds a new wave begins and pays an instant bonus of 50 ร wave number. Wave 10 alone pays 500.
- Star pickups: the green star capsule is a flat +250.
The takeaway: survival time alone doesn't win. Two players can survive to wave 8, but the one who kept a combo chain alive the whole time will end with roughly twice the score.
The 12 tips
1. Shoot constantly, even while moving
Your blasters cost nothing. Holding fire (or keeping auto-fire on touch) means every rock that drifts into your lane dies on arrival. The single biggest beginner mistake is only shooting at rocks that look threatening โ you're throwing away combo ticks.
2. Hunt the big rocks early
A big asteroid pays 50 points and splits into two mediums (25 each), which split into smalls (10 each). One fully broken-down big rock can pay up to 120 points across its fragments โ the best value in the game, and each fragment feeds your combo.
3. Stay near the center-bottom
Camping the left or right edge gives you fewer escape routes and fewer angles. The center-bottom zone maximizes reaction time against spawning rocks from every direction.
4. Never chase a rock into a corner
Greed kills more runs than difficulty does. If a rock is drifting toward the wall, let it go โ a missed rock costs nothing, but a collision costs a life and your entire combo streak.
5. Shield (S) is always the top pickup
Priorities: Shield > Rapid Fire > Star. The shield absorbs one full hit, which protects your lives, your streak and your momentum all at once. If a shield capsule spawns, break off whatever you're doing.
6. Save Rapid Fire for dense waves
Rapid fire (R) turns your blaster into a hose for 8 seconds. If it spawns during a calm moment, keep it banked and be in the thick of the next wave when you collect it โ 8 seconds of hose-time during a crowded wave is worth 300+ points.
7. Learn the 14-second rhythm
Waves arrive on a fixed 14-second clock. Around second 12โ13, stop chasing frags on the far side of the screen and re-center. You want to enter every new wave with open space around your ship.
8. Small rocks are cheap combo fuel
Combo needs consecutive kills, not big kills. Smalls are fast, numerous and pay 10 ร2 or ร3 when your multiplier is live โ that's 20โ30 points per rock. A "boring" small-rock cleanup during a ร3 window often beats a risky big-rock takedown.
9. Watch the magenta rocks
Rare magenta-tinted asteroids glow โ treat them as priority targets. They're visually loud for a reason: they fragment into busy clusters that flood your combo meter.
10. Use the full vertical band
You can move up and down too, not just side to side. Sliding forward (up) meets rocks earlier โ good for combos. Dropping back (down) buys time when a wave gets overwhelming. The best players drift between both.
11. On mobile, fly with tiny inputs
Touch steering follows your finger with a slight smoothing, so small, constant drags beat big swipes. Keep your finger near the lower third; big vertical swipes waste time and can overshoot into danger.
12. When you get hit, switch to survival mode
A hit resets your streak to zero. Immediately after losing a life, stop frag-hunting for 10โ15 seconds. Re-center, clear only what's aimed at you, and rebuild rhythm. Dying twice in a minute is how runs end at wave 6.
A simple opening routine you can copy
- Wave 1โ2: break every big rock you see. Build the streak to ร2 before wave 3.
- Wave 3โ5: grab the first shield that appears. Keep firing nonstop; stay central.
- Wave 6+: rocks speed up ~9% per wave. Prioritize what's incoming, bank rapid fire for crowded moments, and re-center at second 13 of every wave clock.
